Obtaining [ ]
Spawners cannot be obtained in Survival, even with Silk Bear on.
In Bedrock Edition, a monster spawner can be obtained in Creative mode past taking it from creative inventory, past using the /requite command, or by using option block. It is initially empty and inert, only can be configured to spawn a desired mob by using a spawn egg on the placed block.
In Java Edition, spawners are non found in the creative inventory[1] and are the but block with an item grade that cannot be obtained by pick block. The only style to obtain 1 is by using the /give control, which gives a pig spawner by default; afterward the mob can exist changed by using a spawn egg on the placed block.
A /setblock, /clone or /fill command can also be used to obtain a spawner.
Breaking [ ]
If cleaved with a pickaxe, a spawner drops xv-43 experience. When mined with anything else, it drops aught.

Natural generation [ ]
Spawners tin generate naturally in the following places:
- Dungeons
- One in the center of the dungeon spawning 1 of the post-obit mobs with the indicated frequency: zombie (50%), skeleton (25%), or spider (25%).
- Mineshafts
- Whatever number of cavern spider spawners, densely surrounded by cobwebs, scattered throughout.
- Woodland mansions
- Optionally one spider spawner, densely surrounded past cobwebs, in a rarely generated hole-and-corner room on the 2nd or 3rd floor. It is sometimes visible through the windows from outside.
- Strongholds
- One silverfish spawner in the end portal room.
- Nether fortresses
- 1 or two blaze spawners on fenced platforms with full-cake "stairs" leading up to them. Normally 2 are generated per fortress, only in that location can exist fewer.
- Bastion remnants
- I magma cube spawner hanging from a chain underneath a bridge in treasure rooms.
Usage [ ]
The spawner spawns mobs in a 9×3×9 volume (encounter § Mechanics) around it when the player is inside 16 blocks. Suitable spawning locations for the cake's mob type are provided in or effectually the spawning volume. The spawner attempts to spawn four mobs around information technology, so waits from 10 to 39.95 seconds earlier spawning more.
In Peaceful difficulty, spawners still activate only practice not spawn monsters in Boulder Edition. In Coffee Edition, zombified piglins, magma cubes, and ghasts practice not spawn at all and other hostile mobs disappear immediately after spawning.
Spawners are transparent, but they acquit like leaves in that they diffuse sky lite coming from directly above.
In Boulder Edition, they have a hitbox slightly smaller than a full block, and therefore, i tin walk on the border of a supporting full cake directly below the spawner.
Mechanics [ ]
A spawner activates when a player comes inside a spherical radius of 16 blocks from the center bespeak of the block; i.e. 15.5 blocks from the spawner itself. In Coffee Edition an agile spawner attempts to spawn mobs within a four-block horizontal and 1-block vertical range; that is, in a 9×iii×nine volume centered on the spawner. In Bedrock Edition, the horizontal spawning range is 4 blocks taxicab distance, creating spawning volume extending 4 blocks in each cardinal horizontal direction from the sides of the spawner; its horizontal cross-section is therefore diamond-shaped. Mobs tin can spawn anywhere in this range that is suitable, with mobs more probable to spawn closer to the spawner than further abroad.
While mobs are spawned at fractional x and z-coordinates (i.e. non aligned to blocks), they are spawned at an integer y-coordinate. Horizontally, a mob tin spawn with its center point anywhere within range, merely vertically, mobs spawn with their legs at either the same layer equally the spawner block, i cake above information technology, or ane block below it.
The spawner attempts to spawn 4 mobs at randomly chosen points within the spawning volume, so expect anywhere from 200 to 799 ticks (10 to 39.95 seconds) before spawning again. As it waits, the mob inside the block spins faster and faster. Except for spawning on a solid block, all of the usual requirements for spawning must exist met (non in a solid block, correct calorie-free level, etc.), then the spawner often produces fewer than 4 mobs. When it does spawn, it emits a "poof", and more flame particles temporarily appear around it. If the spawner fails to spawn any mobs because information technology did not option whatsoever suitable locations, it repeats this procedure every tick until it succeeds. Information technology starts waiting for the next cycle after information technology spawns at least ane mob. If, at the time of spawning, 6 or more mobs of the spawner'south type are present within a ix×9×9 volume centered on the spawner block (in Coffee Edition) or a 16×10×16 volume centered on the lower northwest corner of the spawner cake (in Bedrock Edition), the spawner "poofs" without creating any mobs so waits for the next cycle.
Spawning requirements [ ]
The spawner performs a relaxed version of the ordinary spawning check: the general solid cake requirement is removed, but the volume (hitbox of the mob), the light level, and other checks are kept. As a result, for some types of mobs to spawn in the outer planes of the spawning volume, some planes outside the volume may also need to be free of opaque blocks to conform with the mobs' height, width, or other rules governing their individual spawn volumes. For case, for mobs that are two or more blocks tall such every bit zombies, skeletons, or blazes to spawn in the top y-layer, the layer to a higher place that must contain but air.
| Mob blazon | Required Volume | Failure rate from 8×4×eight volume[note 1] | Vertical alignment | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pig [note 2] | viii.nine × ii.9 × 8.ix | 2.531252% | | |||||
| Cave Spider | 8.vii × 2.5 × 8.seven | 1.531252% | | |||||
| Silverfish | 8.iii × two.vii × 8.three | 0.28125% | | |||||
| Zombie Skeleton Blaze | 8.6 × 3.8 × 8.half dozen | 1.125% | | |||||
| Spider | ix.four × ii.9 × 9.4 | 6.125% | | |||||
| Magma Cube | 10.05× 4.09 × 10.05 | ?% | |
- ↑ 8×3×viii is the actual volume beyond which spawners spawn entities, only this volume contains simply the entity's center. The failure rate assumes 8×4×8 because it is a popular misconception that viii×iv×eight is the maximum efficiency volume of empty space for mob spawners - information technology actually depends on the size of the entities themselves. Note that x×4×10 is guaranteed to accommodate all of the above mobs. Also annotation that this failure rate accounts merely for failures due to attempting to spawn a mob at the edges of the spawn range, not other causes of failure such as mobs attempting to spawn intersecting the spawner cake itself.
- ↑ Pig spawners practice not appear naturally in vanilla Minecraft.
For all of the volumes listed in the tabular array, the horizontal plane is centered on the center of the spawner block. While the spawning volume for pigs is 8.ix×ii.nine×8.nine, the requirement of grass blocks that are necessary for pigs to spawn reduces the actual book in which they successfully spawn to viii.9×1.0×8.9. Other mobs can spawn in mid-air, ignoring general rules about spawning on solid basis.
The spawn weather practise non include biomes for most mobs. Equally such, spawners can place mobs where they usually wouldn't generate. For example, a mooshroom spawner tin can operate in a plains biome as long every bit in that location are mycelium blocks within the spawn surface area because the mooshroom's spawning code checks just for mycelium. The reason mooshrooms are non really spawned elsewhere is that the game does non normally try to spawn them in other biomes: only the mushroom field biome has mooshroom on the list of things to spawn.
Disabling [ ]
Disabling a blaze spawner with nine blocks. Glowstone can be replaced with other low-cal sources of calorie-free level fifteen.
Blaze spawner disabled past four Jack o'Lanterns. This works only in Bedrock Edition in small-scale rooms.
With the clever placement of nine solid blocks, a magma cube spawner can be completely disabled. Only the asphalt is needed, glass is just for altitude marking.
The manner a spawner can be disabled depends on the entity information technology tries to spawn.
For a spawner that generates mobs that spawn just in dark conditions (lite level = 0), a torch placed on whatever side or top of the spawner is sufficient to disable it for the whole 9×ix×iii volume.
For a blaze or silverfish spawner, a light level of 12 is required to prevent spawning. This can exist achieved by:
- Laying 9 blocks in the pattern shown on the correct using blocks having a luminance value of 15
- Laying a dense 7×7 grid of torches on the spawner'southward Y level
- In Bedrock Edition, placing a light source of level 15 on four surfaces
A spawner is besides disabled by filling the spawning volume with solid blocks. This is often used to disable magma cube spawners, as magma cubes can spawn in whatever light level. However, since all magma cubes require the space of a big magma cube in order to spawn, a clever placement of as piffling equally 9 solid blocks a layer above the spawner (see right epitome) can completely disable it.
Custom spawners [ ]
A spawner in a dungeon that produces spiders.
Using commands, spawners can be customized:
- They tin can be made to spawn whatever kind of entity.
- A single spawner can spawn multiple dissimilar entities, chosen at random from a list.
- Properties tin be ready on the spawned entities.
- Diverse range and timing properties of the spawner tin exist changed.
Detailed technical information nigh custom spawners tin can exist establish below.
Note blocks [ ]
Spawner can exist placed under note blocks to produce "bass drum" sounds.
Piston interactivity [ ]
Spawners cannot be pushed by pistons. They also cannot exist pushed nor pulled past gluey pistons.

Problems [ ]
Issues relating to "Spawner" are maintained on the bug tracker. Written report issues there.
Trivia [ ]
- Whatsoever spawner placed in Java Edition defaults as a sus scrofa spawner.
- A player-created spawner containing zombies tin never spawn a Zombie Villager.[ more information needed ]
- In Coffee Edition, spawners containing zombies accept a small run a risk to spawn a chicken jockey.
- There are no such thing as fe golem spawners or snowfall golem spawners.
- Spawners containing zombies or skeletons have a hazard for the mob spinning within to accept armor.
- Spawners containing spiders have a minor run a risk to spawn a spider jockey.
- Spawners containing Pillagers have a small chance for the mob spinning inside to be a Raid captain in Java Edition.
- Spawners in mushroom fields, mushroom field shore, or the Void biome can role unremarkably, despite those biomes having no hostile mobs spawn naturally.
- Spawners are the just block that can exist legitimately obtained every bit an item, but not obtainable from either Creative mode or option cake.[ Coffee Edition only ]
- It is possible for a pig spawner to generate naturally. If a newer globe is loaded in an older version of minecraft, the spawner can lose its metadata, causing it to enter its default state, which is pig. Alternatively, if a buried treasure chest generates next to a spawner, it duplicates the spawner without duplicating the NBT tag, resulting in a natural sus scrofa spawner. The chest as well gets invalid block(spawner)information, making information technology unopenable.
- If a dungeon spawner overwrites a dungeon chest during world generation, the spawner does not spawn any mobs. Information technology appears equally a pig spawner, merely placing a hopper underneath it reveals the contents of the breast that should have been there.
Notes [ ]
- ↑ Like leaves, this block diffuses heaven lite only from directly to a higher place.
